Tata Sumo Plunges Into Sunkoshi River in Sindhuli, RSS Reports Three Dead, Three Missing
Nagarik News says the driver survived, citing Sindhuli police, contradicting a wire report that counted him among the dead.
Developing story. This brief carries only what was confirmed when it ran, at 12:48 NPT.

A Tata Sumo travelling from Kathmandu to Khotang plunged into the Sunkoshi River at Nagthan in Sindhuli's Fikkal Rural Municipality-6 on Sunday morning, October 18, killing three people and leaving three others missing, The Rising Nepal reported, citing the national news agency RSS.
The Sumo was carrying ten people when the driver lost control at excessive speed, RSS reported. Four people were rescued and taken to a health post in Ghurmi for treatment, the report said.
The Sindhuli District Police Office told Nagarik News that three women died at the scene and that the driver was among the four people pulled out alive. The Rising Nepal, citing RSS, reported instead that the three killed included the driver. That account conflicts with what police told Nagarik.
A rescue operation is underway at the site, with nine divers from the Armed Police Force's disaster management base in Khurkot and ten personnel from the Temporary Monsoon Base in Harkpur, Okhaldhunga, joined by Nepal Police, RSS reported. The crash happened during Dashain, Nepal's biggest festival.
What is not confirmed yet
- Whether RSS will correct its report that the driver died. Sindhuli police told Nagarik News he survived.
- The names and home districts of the three dead and the three missing have not been released.
- Whether the search for the three missing people has found anyone since these reports were filed.
- What exactly caused the driver to lose control, beyond RSS's description of excessive speed.

Judge 1: The core event, three dead and three missing in the Sunkoshi at Nagthan, rests on the Rising Nepal/RSS page and is corroborated by Nagarik's police-sourced account. It is publishable as a breaking brief. The piece still weighs the RSS driver claim equal to the police record. It also carries unsourced details (before dawn, thousands of travellers, packed highways), an absence claim in the take and a card question the record already answers. All are fixable in one pass. The empty caption body and trigger are correct for the breaking format.
Judge 2: All nine ordered edits are in version 3, even though the log lists five as missed. The disagreement block has been emptied rather than corrected, which the rules allow, and the body still names each outlet's account of the driver. Every figure checks against the Rising Nepal/RSS page and is attributed to who gave it and when. The brief does not name the driver and says what is not confirmed yet. The only loose wording, 'health post' for the page's 'local medical facility', is not material. The web search to check the unfetched Nagarik page failed, so its police account rests on the cited key_fact and the red team's reading of other outlets.
The complete record, including the advocate, skeptic, red team and defence arguments, is kept by the newsroom.
