Ten Die on Nepal's Roads, Police Say, and Rolpa Police Put One Crash at Two Dead
Republica's October 18 roundup lists one Rolpa death, but Rolpa police told OnlineKhabar a second woman died on the way to hospital in Dang.

Ten people died in separate road crashes across Nepal, Nepal Police said, in a Republica roundup dated October 18. Two of those crashes happened on Sunday, October 18, one in Nawalpur district and one in Rolpa district.
The two new crashes came a day after a jeep lost control and crashed at Nagthan in Phikkal Rural Municipality, Sindhuli district, on Saturday morning, October 17, killing three people on the spot. That jeep was headed from Kathmandu to Khotang, Republica reported. With three dead, it is the deadliest single crash in Republica's list. Among the dead was 21 year old Yupana Rai of Diktel Rupakot Majuwagadhi Municipality, Khotang. The injured driver and a passenger are being treated at Sindhuli Hospital, and two more patients are at the National Trauma Center in Kathmandu.
On Sunday afternoon, an auto carrying passengers from Bishnunagar towards Kawasoti lost control and fell into a roadside canal at Majhtol in Kawasoti Municipality-6, Nawalpur district, officially called Nawalparasi, Bardaghat Susta East. Isha Sunar, 41, of Hattikhor, died while being treated at Central Hospital in Bharatpur, DC Nepal reported, citing Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Pandit, the Nawalpur district police information officer. OnlineKhabar also reported her death, citing police. Seven people, including the driver, were hurt, DC Nepal and OnlineKhabar reported. Driver Man Singh Thapa, 44, is in police custody while the crash is investigated further, both outlets reported.
Earlier that day, at about 10 am, in Rolpa district, an auto travelling from Ghartigaun towards Pedikhola fell about 600 meters off an interior road at Chalang Bhir in Madi Rural Municipality-1. Khuma Kumari Bhandari, 32, was declared dead at Ghartigaun's Smriti Hospital, district police spokesperson Inspector Rajendra Chanda told OnlineKhabar. A second passenger, 54 year old Gausara Gharti Magar, died on the way to further treatment in Dang. The driver, Kamal Singh Budha, 47, is in police custody.
These are the roads many Nepalis travel to get home for Dashain, in autos, jeeps and on motorcycles. Half of Republica's ten deaths came in one jeep and two autos. The other five involved motorcycles.
What the coverage missed
Republica's roundup, citing police, lists one death in the Rolpa crash, Bhandari. Inspector Rajendra Chanda, the Rolpa police spokesperson, told OnlineKhabar that two women died. Add the second Rolpa death and these police accounts come to eleven dead in these crashes. Neither report shows whether the roundup was written before Gharti Magar died.
A second gap sits in the Kawasoti injured list. OnlineKhabar names five of the seven people hurt. DC Nepal, citing the same Nawalpur police officer, names four injured, including 23 year old Nisha Sunar, who does not appear in OnlineKhabar's account, and reports two more injured people without naming them. Both outlets agree the total injured is seven.
Republica's website also carried a separate headline reporting three women dead and three missing after a jeep plunged into the Sunkoshi. Republica's list of ten names no Sunkoshi crash and no missing people. The pages do not show whether that is a different crash or a later account of the Sindhuli jeep crash, so it is not confirmed whether ten is the country's full road toll.
What we still do not know
- Whether Nepal Police's national figure will include the second Rolpa death.
- Whether the Sunkoshi jeep crash Republica headlined is the Sindhuli jeep crash or a separate one.
- What caused the Rolpa auto to leave the road, since the only report naming a mechanical cause could not be independently verified.
- The full, reconciled list of who was hurt in the Kawasoti crash, a question for the Nawalpur District Police Office.
- How many people were hurt in a separate vehicle accident in Bhimphedi, Makwanpur, that Ekantipur reported the same day, since its full account could not be accessed to confirm the figures.

Editorial review record
Why it ran today
- ranking judge 1: ranked #2 with 70/100. Real development since our October 18 nine-death piece: new Kawasoti and Rolpa crashes take the police count to ten, per Republica, with OnlineKhabar and DC Nepal confirming each crash. This is a safety story for readers on the road this week. Weakest reach dimension is buried angle. Writers must keep the Rolpa brake failure claim and the Bhimphedi injury figures out unless they are verified, and attribute each injury count to its own outlet.
- ranking judge 2: ranked #2 with 70/100. Confirmed from judge 1. The development since our October 18 nine-death piece is the police count reaching ten, per Republica's roundup, with the Kawasoti and Rolpa crashes confirmed by OnlineKhabar and DC Nepal. Weakest reach dimension is buried angle. The piece must say the roundup dates to October 18, and must keep Rolpa brake failure and the Bhimphedi 11 injured, 5 serious figures out unless the primary text is fetched.
What the desk dug up
- The numbers. The two outlets that separately interviewed Nawalpur district police about the Kawasoti canal crash do not agree on who was injured: OnlineKhabar names five injured people while reporting a total of seven hurt including the driver, and DC Nepal's account names a sixth injured person, Nisha Sunar (23), who does not appear anywhere in OnlineKhabar's list. [OnlineKhabar] [DC Nepal]
- The record. The 'brake failure' cause given for the fatal Rolpa auto crash in the story summary is not supported by the only police-sourced account that could be verified; the sole outlet attributing it to brake failure returned an error page when fetched. [OnlineKhabar] [Nepal Press]
- Left out. The 'ten dead' figure is a media aggregation of separate, unrelated district police reports (Sindhuli, Sunsari, Morang, Udayapur, Dhanusha, Rautahat, Nawalpur, Rolpa) rather than a single consolidated statement from Nepal Police headquarters, and Republica's own site that same day carried further, unreconciled accident headlines not folded into the count. [Republica] [Republica]
- The pattern. The two newest crashes added to the toll, Kawasoti and Rolpa, both involved 'auto' three-wheeler passenger vehicles operating on interior/rural roads rather than highways, distinct from the jeep and motorcycle crashes that make up most of the count. [OnlineKhabar] [OnlineKhabar]

Judge 1: Every crash and name checks out against at least two fetched reports. But the package presents Republica's roundup of separate accidents as a running Dashain holiday toll, which no source says, and its own Sunkoshi paragraph contradicts that. It also states a Rolpa miscount as fact on the card, hook, trigger, take and disagreement card, when the pages cannot rule out a later update. One editing pass fixes the framing, the card, the October 18 dating the ranking order requires, the DC Nepal overstatement and the unsourced road, overload, timing and 'at the scene' details.
Judge 2: All eight edits judge 2 ordered were made. The caption now puts the Rolpa crash earlier in the day and the Kawasoti crash in the afternoon. The injury counts are attributed. The 'deadliest' line is the newsroom's own reading, not Republica's. The Sunkoshi crash is hedged in the take, the body and the open questions. The Nepal Press entry no longer claims a cause. On a full reread every death, injury, name, age, place and time checks against the fetched Republica, OnlineKhabar and DC Nepal pages, and the ranking orders are met. Small faults remain but none is high severity: the hook is close to the card wording, and the Bhimphedi bullet says 'the same day' with no date to back it. Virality sits slightly below the newsroom's target. This is a flaw, not grounds to reject an accurate breaking safety story.
The complete record, including the advocate, skeptic, red team and defence arguments, is kept by the newsroom.
