Government says ex-Chief Justice Rana was rescued, not arrested
Chief Justice Sharma met the police chief after judges grilled him over ties to Rana, whose pension his own bench cleared the way for on September 9.

Nepal's government has now offered a third official explanation for why police took former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana from his home at 3am on Sunday, September 27.
Sasmit Pokharel, the Education Minister and government spokesperson, told reporters on Tuesday, September 29, that "it is already clear that he was neither arrested nor taken into custody," according to HimalPress. Pokharel told Ratopati that Rana "was not arrested, he was rescued." He said Rana's family had reported a security threat sent by text message and had themselves asked police for extra protection, Radio Nepal Online reported.
That is the third label for the same night. Police first called it an arrest. Hours later they said Rana had been brought in over a security concern. Family members told the Kathmandu Post officers mentioned a threat linked to Gen Z activists, but The Statesman reported the family said no warrant was ever shown. Rana was released to relatives by Sunday afternoon, after being held about 10 hours. The Supreme Court's full court, a meeting of all sitting justices, later objected to Rana being held for about 10 hours, OnlineKhabar reported.
Rana once headed Nepal's top court. Yet the official account of one night at his home changed three times in three days.
The dispute has now pulled in the sitting Chief Justice, Manoj Kumar Sharma. A day after the full court met on Monday, September 28, Sharma met Dan Bahadur Karki, the Inspector General of Police, Nepal's police chief, one on one at the Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon, OnlineKhabar reported. Neither side has disclosed what they discussed.
That meeting followed a tenser one. In a nearly two hour full court meeting on Monday, September 28, judges questioned Sharma directly about his relationship with Rana and said conditions inside the judiciary had worsened since he took charge, Setopati and OnlineKhabar reported.
What the coverage missed
One public record links the two men. On September 9, a Constitutional Bench, a special panel that hears disputes over constitutional questions, led by Sharma dismissed writs challenging Rana's suspension and ruled his four year old impeachment motion had "lost its purpose," clearing the way for his pension, The Statesman and Nepalnews reported.
Accounts differ on who threatened Rana. Police and his family told the Kathmandu Post the threat involved Gen Z activists. Ratopati quoted Pokharel saying the threat instead came from an unnamed group unconnected to Gen Z. No agency has named the group or described the actual threat.
What we still do not know
- Whether police sought or obtained a warrant before entering Rana's home, a question only the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office or the Home Ministry can answer.
- What specific rulings or appointments judges meant when they reportedly accused the courts of becoming a "superstore" under Sharma, per OnlineKhabar, a claim only the judges who raised it or Judicial Council records can substantiate.
- What Sharma and Karki discussed on Tuesday, a question only their own offices can answer.

Editorial review record
Why it ran today
- ranking judge 1: ranked #2 with 70/100. We covered the Rana case Sept 27 to 29, so this runs only on two new facts. Minister Pokharel gave the government's first direct explanation, 'moved to safety', after the full bench objected, confirmed by Rising Nepal and Radio Nepal. Chief Justice Sharma also met IGP Karki one on one, confirmed by Nagarik and Setopati. The judges' reported criticism of Sharma rests on unnamed accounts of a closed meeting and must stay attributed and secondary. The weakest reach dimension is share identity.
- ranking judge 2: ranked #2 with 70/100. Runs only on facts new since our Sept 27 to 29 pieces. A minister now says Rana was moved to safety, per Rising Nepal and Radio Nepal. Chief Justice Sharma met IGP Karki one on one, per Nagarik, Setopati and OnlineKhabar. Judges' criticism of Sharma rests on unnamed accounts of a closed meeting and stays attributed and secondary. Weakest reach dimension is share identity.
What the desk dug up
- record: The Chief Justice now facing a judicial revolt, Manoj Kumar Sharma, personally led the four-member Constitutional Bench that on September 9, 2026 dismissed all pending writs and ruled that Cholendra Shumsher Rana's four-year-old impeachment motion had 'lost its purpose,' restoring Rana's pension and retirement benefits — just weeks before the same Rana was taken from his home by police at 3am. [The Statesman] [Nepalnews (English)]
- numbers: Officials have now given four different characterizations of the same pre-dawn action against Rana — 'arrested' by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, 'taken from his residence' per a senior police source, 'brought in over a security threat' per later police statements, and now 'moved to safety' per Minister Pokharel — while Rana's family maintains no warrant was shown. [The Statesman] [The Rising Nepal]
- missing: Judges reportedly demanded to know why the Special Court and other courts have become like a 'superstore' in the three months since Sharma took over, but no outlet — including the two carrying the fullest accounts of the full-court meeting — names a single appointment, bail order or case allocation behind that allegation. [OnlineKhabar] [Setopati]
- pattern: Nepal has been here before: in 2017 then-Supreme Court judge Cholendra Rana stayed impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, and Rana's own 2022 impeachment motion was never put to a vote and instead lapsed on a procedural technicality — a recurring pattern of apex-court impeachments being resolved by judicial or procedural intervention rather than on the merits. Judge 1: The body handles the shifting arrest and rescue labels carefully. But it carries two unsourced favouritism claims against a sitting Chief Justice and a misattributed ruling. It also implies a link between the pension ruling and the police visit. The sources, key_facts, card, caption and take are empty or corrupted, so nothing can be checked or shared, but every problem is fixable in one pass with the edits listed.
Judge 2: All five version 3 edits were made. Sources and key facts carry article URLs. The meeting rests on OnlineKhabar alone. The dek and caption now say the ruling cleared the way for the pension. The full court objection keeps the plain action. The dates check out: September 27, 2026 was a Sunday. The dek is 149 characters and the card lines are 23 and 20. A full reread found no new unsourced claim and no status stated in the newsroom's voice, so the piece clears the accuracy and defensibility targets. I could not verify the URLs by search because the tool limit was hit, and virality sits right at the target because the stakes are mostly institutional.
The complete record, including the advocate, skeptic, red team and defence arguments, is kept by the newsroom.
