Setopati counts three journalists held and at least three more sought after police went to four Kathmandu newsrooms on Friday, October 30.

Developing story. This brief carries only what was confirmed when it ran, at 19:25 NPT.

Plainclothes police entered Kathmandu newsrooms on Friday, October 30, taking journalists into custody while searching for several others, Setopati reported.

Police took Bishwamani Subedi of Nepal Press from the outlet's Baneshwor newsroom and handed him to the Cyber Bureau, Setopati and The Kathmandu Post reported. Police said they acted on a letter from the Cyber Bureau, Setopati reported. The charge and the legal basis have not been made public. Police then summoned Nepal Press chairman Bindu Raj Lamsal and editor-in-chief Matrika Paudel to the Cyber Bureau, Nagarik News reported, citing police sources who linked it to a Nepal Press report that the government was increasing pressure on Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki, the head of Nepal Police.

Dhiraj Basnet, editor-in-chief of DNA Khabar, told Setopati that the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office phoned him to ask about his eSewa number, then kept him there when he went in. A DNA Khabar journalist told OnlineKhabar the call mentioned an eSewa scam. Shobharaj Baral, editor-in-chief of Motivate News, was taken from the outlet's Bijulibazar office, according to Janmadev Jaisi, president of the Working Journalists' Association, OnlineKhabar English reported.

Police went to Naya Patrika seeking correspondent Navaraj Mainali to take him to the Cyber Bureau and had not shown an arrest warrant, editor Khagendra Pant told OnlineKhabar English, and went to Diyo Post seeking editor-in-chief Sudeep Bishwakarma and editor Rita Budhathoki, Setopati reported. OnlineKhabar English reported police asked for Bishwakarma and news coordinator Madan Dhungana.

Home Ministry spokesperson Anand Kafle said, "I won't say I don't have information on this, but we need to understand more," OnlineKhabar reported. The Prime Minister's Secretariat denied any involvement or knowledge, Nepal Press reported. The Federation of Nepali Journalists called the arrests "state terror" and demanded they stop immediately, OnlineKhabar reported.

What is not confirmed yet

  • The charges against Subedi, Baral and Basnet, which police have not made public, Setopati reported.
  • Whether Mainali, Bishwakarma and Budhathoki were taken into custody or remained free.
  • Whether Friday's separate newsroom visits are connected, which Setopati said is unclear.
  • Whether the Home Ministry will state a formal position beyond Kafle's remarks.

1 red team round, 1 revision. Decision: approved.

Judge 1: The core event is solid. Setopati and OnlineKhabar independently confirm three journalists held and more sought, and the brief keeps its unknowns honest. Several things still need fixing in one pass. The headline and card state 'arrest' and 'raid' in our own voice, and the hook says all three were taken from newsrooms when Basnet was held at a police office. The eSewa scam wording is given to the wrong outlet, two names are misspelt against the outlet's Latin script, and 'had not shown a warrant' became 'without a warrant'. The red team's five-newsroom count and its caption-body demand are overruled.

Judge 2: The revision log marks the edits as still missed, but all twelve ordered edits are in the article as it stands. I checked the headline, dek, card, hooks, Basnet attribution, name spellings, warrant wording, Kafle quote and used_for against Setopati 401637, OnlineKhabar and Nagarik. The core event rests on Setopati and OnlineKhabar independently, and every figure and status word is attributed. Two small leftovers do not change any fact and do not justify a rejection, since no revisions are left: key_facts still spells 'Shobhraj' where the body has 'Shobharaj', and the FNJ, PM Secretariat and Kathmandu Post lines rest on pages that were not fetched, with URL slugs that match the claims.

The complete record, including the advocate, skeptic, red team and defence arguments, is kept by the newsroom.
