A Scorpio jeep carrying nine people plunged about 250 meters off a mountain road in Gulmi district on Monday afternoon, October 26. Six people have died, the Gulmi District Police Office said, after five died at the scene and a sixth died later in hospital.

The jeep, registered Ba.A. 0220, was travelling from Chirkot in Syangja toward Rakset in Gulmi when it left the Kaligandaki Corridor road at Daboukhani, in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-2, around 4 pm, Republica and OnlineKhabar English reported, citing police.

DC Nepal and OnlineKhabar named the five who died at the scene as driver Dilip Kumar Bagale, 67, of Walling-2 in Syangja; Shiv Parajuli of Walling-10; Loknath Pandey and Sita Pandey, both originally from Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-1 in Gulmi and now living in Walling; and Kulanand Pandey of Butwal, DC Nepal reported. OnlineKhabar reported that police have yet to confirm the details of one of the five. It did not say which.

The sixth victim, Nita Bagale, died during treatment at Kaligandaki Community Hospital in Mirmi, Syangja, police told OnlineKhabar and DC Nepal. Three others, named by DC Nepal as Chhabilal Pandey, Gomata Pandey and Balakrishna Subedi, were sent on for further treatment to hospitals in Palpa and Pokhara.

Setopati reported nine passengers were aboard the jeep, citing the Gulmi District Police Office, which had earlier put the toll at five dead and four injured before the sixth death was confirmed.

What is not confirmed yet

  • What caused the jeep to leave the road. The Gulmi District Police Office said the cause remains under investigation.
  • The identity of one of the five named above. OnlineKhabar reported police are still confirming that person's details.
  • Whether the toll could rise further. Police told OnlineKhabar that Chhabilal Pandey is in serious condition and that Gomata Pandey and Balakrishna Subedi are in moderate condition.

Judge 1: The core event is solid: a jeep fell about 250 meters in Gulmi and six are dead. Several newsrooms carry it, and police are named as the source of the count. One unconfirmed bullet is factually wrong: it says police gave no condition update, yet police told OnlineKhabar the injured's conditions after the sixth death. The scene victims' names also need their caveat attached, and the card and hook need tightening. The empty caption body and trigger are correct for a breaking brief and are not to be filled.

Judge 2: All nine ordered edits were made. The unconfirmed identity, the condition of the injured, the hedge on 'about 250 meters', the date and the card now match OnlineKhabar's update, DC Nepal and Setopati. Several newsrooms carry the event, and every count is credited to police. Three small flaws remain, none high severity and none fixable now that no revision is left. Key fact 1 credits the 250 meter fall to Republica, whose page does not give that figure, though OnlineKhabar and DC Nepal do. Paragraph 2 credits the 4 pm time to Republica as well as OnlineKhabar English, but only OnlineKhabar English gives it. Paragraph 3 uses semicolons, which house style bans.

The complete record, including the advocate, skeptic, red team and defence arguments, is kept by the newsroom.
